[comp.sys.mac.apps] Using HeapFixer

kehr@felix.UUCP (Shirley Kehr) (06/29/90)

:I have been seeing a lot of bombs on my Mac II since I updated to 6.0.5. But
:our Mac IIci and MacPluses (running virtually the same System software, inits,
:cdevs, and applications) do not bomb. I did use the "easy install" option
:to update to 6.0.5, and I did use HeapFixer to increase the System heap size.
:But I find the behavior of the System heap to be incomprehensible. It seems
:that, no matter what size I choose with HeapFixer, as soon as I reboot and
:examine the display in the "About the Finder" dialog, the memory allocated
:to the System is filled - even before I do anything else. This happens even
:when the System heap is expanded by 400k over normal.

Did you read the document that came with HeapFixer? I seem to recall that
the minimum value must be 800K over normal. They had a formula approach to
determining what number to enter and warned that it looked like it would
be too large at first, but that you weren't really adding as much as it
seemed.
