It seems to me that a small PostScript prolog to your table could be written to solve the problem; the ".para" environment includes variables for things like the current margin settings, the width of the table, and the current indent. Knowing the page width, and possibly other things (e.g., the number of columns on the page), I'd bet a number of PostScript hackers out there could come up with a usable piece of postscript; it could be kept in a glossary entry, to be pasted before any table that might give problems.
