[comp.sys.mac.apps] PostScript?

rabanes@uhccux.uhcc.Hawaii.Edu (Greg Rabanes) (06/29/90)

Hi,

Could anyone out there recommend a Mac paint and/or draw program
that can read in raw PostScript files?

Thanks,
G. <rabanes@uhccux.uhcc.hawaii.edu>

If it's a truly valid postscript file, with a good header and all, then
Adobe Illustrator should open and edit it. Illustrator works with EPS
files too.

It would be great if it were true but unfortunately it isn't.
Illustrator CAN open files in its own format. The Illustrator file format
IS an EPS file. It cannot open an arbitrary EPS file, only those which
are in the Adobe Illustrator format. The difference is that an EPS file
can contain an arbitrary collection of PostScript code that follows
certain guidelines so that it is well behaved. An Illustrator file
is MUCH more highly structured than an arbitrary EPS file, hence it
knows how to open the file and allow you to edit it.
Adobe Illustrator 88 allows you to import arbitrary EPS files and
treat that file as an object. You can shear, rotate, etc. just like
other objects in Adobe Illustrator. You cannot edit the individual
components of the EPS file in this case.
The Illustrator file format is available from Adobe Systems.
You can call Adobe Developer Support and request the document or
you can send a message to the Adobe file server and request a copy
of the document describing the format in a form suitable to sending
to a PostScript printer. To use the file server, send a message to
	ps-file-server@adobe.com
and make the subject line 'help'

Hope this helps,
