In fact Frame Maker will allow figures, tables and sections etc. to be 
autonumbered in your favorite style (multilevel, alphabetical, prefixes ...)
Cross-references can be titles (text), their auto-numbers, current page-number
or the section in which they occur, and they will be maintained and updated
within and *between* documents (such as chapters of a book). The updating
of the numbers happens immediately or at the very least when redisplaying 
the page - there is no need for it to happen at print time.

Yes, on Suns other programs do use RPC calls.
But you can use the interface even for your own programs.
