The best Macinotsh program I have seen this year is "The Magic Flute" from Warner New Media. This is a $55.00 3-CD-ROM set that is a complete audio recording of Mozart's the Magic Flute, with 15M of hypercard stack, CD-graphics (if yo have an appropriate player) and MIDI versions of the major themes, and, if you have an appropriate Pioneer laser disk player, it will sync, Bergman;s movie version of "The Magic Flute" to the audio. While the audio is playing you get a synchronized track of your choice of: English translation of the opera, German text of the opera Play-by-play analysis of the story Measure-by-Measure analysis of the music. Most frames have 4 footnotes, that lead you to a wealth of additional material (such as a digitized version of the origianl playbill from 1791) Some of the footnotes are audio (my favorite is the absolute worst performance every recorded of the Queen of the Night Aria.) There are three separate "Opera Quiz"s to see how well you listened. it is just incredibly rich. You could dive into it and not come up for days. The art that accompanies the thing is great. This thing is terrific. If you have a CD-ROM player, and you can spare,. even temporarily, 14M of hard disk space (it will limp along in 5M of spcae if you are cramped) then BUY THIS! I don't know what kind of crazy man authorized this: a truly incredible product, for almost no market. I mean, how many people have a mac with a CD-ROM drive? so, buy it now before they figure out what a mistake they are making and take it off the market. -- -- David Phillip Oster - Note new address. [ and so on ] All true. Also, on my system, if I have Suitcase installed, the screens don't display all the text. To be more precise, a few of the screens have some text. (Same thing on my wife's IIcx and the kids' Plus.) I make my living by technical writing and I don't feel like removing Suitcase and rebooting every time I want to use TMF. Anyone want my copy? ------------ The only drawback with morning is that it comes at such an inconvenient time of day. ------------

The Magic Flute has been one of my favorites for years. The music is fantastic and the Bergman film brings out the comedy. Not what I'd call typical Bergman. My wife bought me the video tape a couple of years ago and our three year old daughters (triplets) have caught the bug too. They request to see the video, even over The Little Mermaid!. I don't have a CD player, at least one that understands CD-ROMs, so getting this set is a ways off. I hope it lasts that long. Bill Lund HP Cupertino

Which Pinoeer laser disk player is "appropriate"? I assume you mean the one which has the ability to play all of the laser disc formats. Does it also have the ability to read CD-ROMs? >This thing is terrific. You will also want to know about the "Beethoven's 9th Symphony" analysis marketed by (Voyager??). The recording enclosed is not a new one (however, it's arguably the best--the one with Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne in the finale), and there is no videodisc link, but the quality of the analysis, and the richness of its (hypercard) interconnectedness, is truly wondrous. Robert Winter did the writing, and assisted with the very elegant screen layouts, proving that the key to doing something like this is to get one of the absolute top minds in the field to provide the text. The medium matters little if what's being presented isn't valuable. Jon

Therefore, you need to copy the stacks on the CD-ROM to some other media so that they will be accessible to playing the audio. -- -- David Phillip Oster - Note new signature.
