Does MacWrite 5.0 break while running under System 6.0.4 or 6.0.5? I remember, perhaps wrongly (wrongly?), reading an article a while back saying that they were incompatible, and that Claris wasn't going to fix the problem. Claris instead said to upgrade to MacWrite II, which worked fine. The situation: We've got a lab full of Mac SE's still running 6.0.2, with a few copies of MacWrite 5.0 available on the file server. We just came up with a need to upgrade to System 6.0.5. Will we need to upgrade to MacWrite II? -John --- John O'Malley / Macintosh / Purdue University / (317) omalley@mace.cc.purdue.edu / Specialist / Computing Center / 494-1787

As far as I can tell, Claris is real good at writing software that works on ALL version of the OS after whatever the minimal requirements state. I can't give you a generic answer, but I run a Mac IIfx with System 6.0.5, and MacWrite 5.0 has given me no trouble. I don't use it extensively, but it seems fine for everyday tasks like reading someone's memo, or writing a few pages of documentation. > The situation: We've got a lab full of Mac SE's still running 6.0.2, with > a few copies of MacWrite 5.0 available on the file server. If it doesn't work, either restore the machines to 6.0.2, or think about MacWrite II. I believe the problem is with the spell checker. As you run your file through the MW 5.0 spell checker under System 6.0.4, it [the file] is routed into oblivion, one word at a time. I can't find the McWEEK this was described it, but I would think a call to Claris would certainly produce the correct answer... chaz -- -- Joan Rivers Slaughters Ninety-Five Chinese Physicists in drunken rampage. -spew clarson@ux.acs.umn.edu AOL:Crowbone

This is interesting. I spoke with a person in Claris Tech Support after posting my original note wondering if MacWrite 5.0 breaks under the latest system software. He said that MacWrite 5.0 has not been tested with System 6.0.4 or 6.0.5. But he also said that MacWrite 5.0 is known to crash under those systems. The one specific problem he mentioned is that the spelling checker can sometimes erase one's entire document. MacWrite II, he said, has been tested, etc. ... Yet Peter in his above posting and three people in email messages all said that they use MacWrite 5.0 on various Macs with System 6.0.4 and 6.0.5 without any problems. (Thanks for your responses!) I'm torn between using the word of someone in tech support, who presumably has data to back up his claims, versus several people who have the setup we need and report no problems. Oh well. In our particular situation, despite being more inclined to think it'll work fine, we're gonna take the conservative & cautious approach. Our lab is going to have to do without MacWrite 5.0 for a while so that we can upgrade the system software. No big deal ... all the machines have Microsoft Word 4.0 anyway. If need be, it'll be cheap to upgrade to MacWrite II down the road and avoid the whole problem. -John --- John O'Malley / Macintosh / Purdue University / (317) omalley@mace.cc.purdue.edu / Specialist / Computing Center / 494-1787

(Thanks for your responses!) I guess I (Peter) must add that I only use MacWrite 5.0 for reading docs since it somehow manages to get launched when I "open" an old format MacWrite file, usually a downloaded "read only" version. I use MacWrite II for document creation, editing, and spelling checking so I have to admit that I have never used the MW 5.0 spelling checker on 6.0.4 (I did use it on 6.0.2 with no problems). Sorry for the misleading information. By the way, I believe that Claris shipped a third party spell checker with MW 5.0. Peter C.
