[comp.sys.mac.apps] AppleShare PrintServer

jjwcmp@ultb.isc.rit.edu (Jeff Wasilko) (09/03/90)

Does Apple's PrintServer support multiple printers? How does the user
select the destination printer?

Is it possible for the PrintServer send the print job to the
least-loaded printer? How about restricting access to a printer (like a
Lino)?

Thanks,

Yes, Print Server supports up to five spooled printers. From memory, I
believe you select "Setup" from the File menu. It'll give you a dialog
box showing you the available printers and the already "captured" printers.

Once you've created the queues, users select their destination printers
in their Chooser, just like you would unspooled printers.

No and not really. AppleShare Print Server allows you to create one
queue per one printer, and tie in one printer to only one queue. If that
capability is absolutely necessary, you'd have to go with something like
a Novell server based on a PC with a LocalTalk card.

Your ability to restrict access is limited. AppleShare lets you decide if
only the spooled printer appears on the network (appears in everyone's
Chooser ... this is called the "Bypass" option, and is off by default) or
if both the spooled and unspooled appear.

Perhaps your best bet is this: You can make only the spooled printer
available, and set it up so that users can spool files but not print
them. Then you could go to the server and delete files from unauthorized
users before they print. All this is set up from that same "Setup" option,
initially.
