I received a number of responses to this query. Unfortunately all were of the form: "I've been searching for just such a facility - please let me know if you find one." In the event, I performed the conversion of quite a number of documents largely manually, from the results obtained by using a UNIX shell program to alter the troff/MS input to avoid hyphenation and justification, run the result through nroff to get ASCII output, and call a small UNIX filter to remove unwanted line endings from this ASCII output. This was quite succesful, but not something I'd like to make a habit of! I remain convinced that a program which took account of even just the common MS commands would be worth having, even though my own particular need for it has now diminished, and am surprised it apparently does not yet exist.
