[comp.sys.mac.apps] WordPerfect PC->Mac problems

a544@mindlink.UUCP (Rick McCormack) (09/19/90)

I often shift files between WP 4.2/5.0 from the old XT to my Mac Plus, via
modem. I save the files in the Generic Word Processor format (Control F5,
?3?)on the xt and send em to the Mac. Most formatting is retained. Even Tabs
seem to work, they don't become spaces. I use MS Word 4.00 on the Plus.

I am using Macintosh WordPerfect 1.0.5, and having trouble converting
documents between it and PC WordPerfect.

1) Document created in PC WP 4.2. Uploaded to UNIX and back down to the
Mac. Document reads in, but loses line breaks (turn into spaces) and
wraparound (no space in between words).

2) Document created in PC WP 5.1. Uploaded to UNIX and back down to the
Mac. Document does not read in: alert comes up saying "End of File".

3) Same as (2), but document saved in 5.0 format. Same result.

4) Document created in Mac WP, saved in 5.0 format. Uploaded to UNIX and
back down to the PC. Document reads in to WP 5.1 but loses everthing past
page 3 (of 11 pages). What gets converted is pretty acceptable, but losing
pages isn't.

Any hints? Should I try converting the files using PC disks and AFX?
Is there a problem between PC files being flat and Macintosh files having
two forks? Is Mac WP simply deficient and I should use Word for Word or
some other converter?

Well, duh. The problem was the I was using kermit and didn't have
*both* ends transferring in binary mode.

Although I must say Mac WP doesn't do such a wonderful job of converting,
even though it does do the conversion...

You don't mention one detail which may be the source of your difficulty,
how are you moving the files between the desktop machines and the UNIX
machine? The word processor document files you are dealing with should
be transferred as binary files (not ascii text) so you have to make
sure that your communication software on the Mac, the UNIX and DOS
machines are set to send and receive binary.

The other thing that might help is to give up trying to do anything with
Mac WordPerfect 1.0.5 until version 2.0 comes out ;-).

Which is when? I've heard "end of month", which I suppose means
December :-) or :-(, who knows.

Will it have better conversion filters?

I haven't heard much about actual dates lately. When WordPerfect came
to BMUG to show 2.0 a while ago if sounded like it should be coming
pretty soon now (this Fall sometime) and yes, they claimed it was going
to handle conversions a lot better.

By the way, though, do you *want* to use WordPerfect on the Mac?
I mean, if your only concern is translation between Macs and
WordPerfect on the PC, you don't have to use WordPerfect on the
Mac. Translation between PC WordPerfect and various Mac word
processors (I use Word) is easily done with MacLink translators
from DataViz. You can also save a Microsoft Word file from the Mac
as Word DOS and then have the WordPerfect conversion program make
the translation from MS Word PC to WordPerfect PC. Sometimes this
seems to handle things even better than the DataViz translator
(which, by the way, is the same thing as the most recent version of
the TOPS translators).

Of course then you have to use Word, which is above and beyond the
call of punishment :-). Seriously, I've found that the fewest number
of file formats you go through, the better. And WordPerfect 2.0 does
look pretty snazzy. I've heard October from WP reps at several
occasions...

Once version 2.0 comes out, I think you will. It does a lot of good stuff
and seems pretty easy to use. For those of us who aren't wedded to Word,
this may be the program we're looking for.
