I recently FTP'd the Darkness screensaver from sumex-aim.stanford.edu. Darkness is not an INIT. It is a background application that runs under multifinder. Since I already have many more INITs and cdevS than I feel comfortable with, I thought this was a great idea. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. At least, not the way I want it to. If I start it manually after booting up, it seems to work OK, but if I specify it as a startup application, it starts causing all sorts of problems -- all those system hangs I was hoping to prevent! Anybody have an idea what is going on? I also have the _Launch application set as a startup application. _Launch is an icon dock written by the same guy that wrote Darkness, so I would hope they are compatible. ..... In an unrelated topic, has anyone ever tried hooking a modem up to a Shiva Ethergate and using it for remote dial-in access. the docs say you should be able to, but it isn't quite working for me. I can dial out of the network with the modem just fine. but when I try to dial-in (using Shiva's special cdev -- and yes, I ran the installer) it connects with the modem, but is unable to hook up to the network. I get back a dialog telling me to check my connections and settings and try again. thanks!

Although I have not used the Shiva Ethergate specifically, I have used their remote dial-in access software with the Shiva NetModem 2400. From that experience, I would highly recommend that you don't bother trying to get it to work. The dial-in access is PAINFULLY slow. I timed a file transfer at approximately 1k per minute. Don't get me wrong -- I am quite happy with the performance of the modem itself, and I intend to get a NetModem 9600 shortly, but I would not consider using the remote dial-in software for any task that had to be completed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | Ahem.
