You can have multiple archives open at one time, and moves files between them, which is useful. The best new feature, as far as I'm concerned, is the ability to open compressed folders and extract selectively files inside them.... There are a lot of other minor additions like that (view by name, view by date, for instance). If some of these will be in "StuffIt Classic" 1.6, you might not need the Deluxe version, even if you want these. >Does it compress much more? Yes, if you use the "Better" compression method. This is awfully slow on a Mac SE, but for semi-permanent archiving it's useful. It still provides the standard StuffIt ("Classic"?) methods, too. Also, there is the ability to hook customized compression modules in; it comes with a few, though only for certain sound files and pictures. >Is it much faster? Not that I've noticed. >How much is StuffIt-Deluxe, by the way? I think it's about $75 mail-order, but don't quote me on that; I got it through the upgrade offer. This is awfully >slow on a Mac SE, but for semi-permanent archiving it's useful. It Oh, my. Don't get me wrong -- I LIKE Macs, unlike most PC owners you'll meet. But my number-one gripe about using a Mac to do the bulletin-board thing is the horrifying slowness of Mac compression programs compared to those for the PC. I assume there is a variety of reasons for this. But the thought of ANYTHING being slower than StuffIt sends shivers up and down my spine. -- ...
