Has anyone experienced a similar situation? I have a Mac IIci, 8 megs of RAM, running MultiFinder, MasterJuggler (with 6 or 7 or so font files) and a good handfull of inits and cdevs. When I start PageMaker 4.0 and try to access its spell checker, I get a message that there are too many files open and I cannot use the spell checker. Because of this situation, other features of the program also do not work, in particular the hyphenation routines. Aldus says that this is a Mac OS system error, and that I should change the bootblock to allow more open files. They indicate that PM 4.0 generates a lot of temp files, that when combined with the MasterJuggler font files, inits, and cdevs, the Mac OS will not allow PM 4.0 to spell check, or allow the hyphenation routines to kick in. I am looking for your comments. Is the problem mine (I should cut down somehow on font files, or I should muck around inside the bootblock), or with Aldus (they should redesign the program), or a combination of both? I will post a summary of the replies to the net. But please, reply. Aldus is right, t's a Mac OS problem. You can only have so many files open at once, which is stored in the 'boot blocks' of your boot disk. The only utility I know of that changes this is included with Disktop 4.0. I think Suitcase II might do this. In fact, I would be surprised if Juggler doesn't since these are the programs that cause the problem in the first place. If it doesn't, just combine your font files. Also, you might want to get the initCDEV, which can shut off all but a minimal set of inits at startup, to conserve still more file slots (shareware, at sumex).

Well, you will have to alter the boot blocks in order to expand the number of open files that you can have. Seems sort of strange in MultiFinder (especially when you're running 16 Megs of virtual memory, as I do on my SE), but alas it shows its ugly face from time to time. Included below is a nice utility called Set File Count. There is a default number of files that can be open at once. It is stored in the boot blocks of the disk your are booting from. You would expect Master Juggler or Suitcase to allow you to open as many files as you want, but there is a default limit. It is quite easy to change the limit, the easiest way (if you have suitcase) is to go to "power user settings" and there you will be presented with the option of inceasing/decreasing the number of open files. The default is 12 (from memory), if you intend to op en many files you should probably up the limit to 20-25. For those of you using real Appleshare Servers, it is good idea to increase the number of open files if you store fonts/das that can be open by users. From memory, Appleshare automatically increases that default but often not enough in my experience. If you don't have suitcase, you can use Fedit to edit the boot blocks, but its slightly harder. BTW each extra open file you allocate in the boot blocks uses about ~300 bytes of RAM. >I will post a summary of the replies to the net. But please, reply.
