After running NU for about a week now, I decided to undelete some files. With absolutely no INITs or 3rd Party cdevs running, I undeleted some applications and files to a floppy. All applications and files were deemed "recoverability excellent" by NU, that is, none of the sectors these files took up were being used by any other (undeleted) files. Well. None of the the three applications ran at all. Under Mulitfinder they all claimed to run out of finder memory before even drawing menu bars, and quit. Under the finder, they either claimed a problem before drawing any menu bars, or crashed the Mac before doing so. The applications were Table Maker 1.0 from Pagemaker 4.0; Hypercard 1.2; and DeltaGraph Icon Installer, which actually is not an application at all but is designed to update finder information when dragged onto a disk. Normally, it quits harmlessly when launched. Further anomalies with these "undeleted" applications were that their Get Info boxes listed suggested and actual memory under Multifinder as "n/a," which they normally do not; and when I typed generous values in (2.5M on my 5M se/30), the Get Info box took a very very long time to go away. It also took a long time to open. I had no better luck with 5 Word documents and a text document from TeachText (it was some readme thing). 4 of the Word documents were complete an utter gibberish, symbols mixed with letters, and the occasional english words ha nothing whatsoever to do with what was supposed to be in those documents. The 5th document caused Word to bomb under the Finder, and to quit unexpectedly under MultiFinder. The teachtext document was complete gibberish. I am going straight but straight back to SUM, and unless NU does a good job at rescuing files from damaged disks, better than SUM (which is far from perfect), MacConnection is going to be giving me some money back. All comments/insights very welcome.
