[comp.sys.mac.apps] Need recommendations on Label making programs

jlc@atux01.UUCP (Jim Collymore) (10/30/90)

I'm looking for recommendations for a good, easy-to-use label making program.
It should be able to handle at least 10,000 names, be easy to format, be able
to handle a variety of labels, run on an ImageWriter II or LaserWriter, handle
graphics (color would be nice), be easy to format the addresses, and be able
to easily import addresses from other programs.

If you have any experience with such programs, please send me e-mail as soon
as possible with your opinions on which programs you'd recommend.

Thanks very much.

Jim, I tried email but it kept bouncing back, so...

Satori Software has two programs, Bulk Mailer and Bulk Mailer Plus. I haven't
used either in quite some time, but here's what I know about the old (3yrs ago)
version:

Fairly structured (that is, the entry screen expects courtesy title, first,
last, etc...). You could add letter codes (I was maintaining a list for a
Shakespeare festival: A = alumnus, D = donor, G = guest, and so on). Sorted
by all the usual criteria... name, company name, zip. Was pretty good at
outputting to 1-up, 3-up, and other variations of label layouts--IW and Laser
output both supported. What I really liked about the program, though, was its
duplicate checking function. It would flag duplicates by splitting the screen
in half and showing you the dupes on the right and left sides (sorta like
Font/DA Mover, heh). You could choose automatic removal of exact dupes or
you could choose which one you wanted to delete (a delete button on each
side). It would also flag "near-duplicates"--where everything was the same
except the zip, or the address line, say. This was EXTREMELY helpful in iden-
tifying people who had moved, data entry mistakes, and so on. I *think* it
also did preparation for bulk-mail sorting (a little hesitant on this one,
as I MAY be thinking of a different program here...)--identified groups
with more than ten of a single 5-digit zip, etc. etc. If you do bulk-mail,
you know what I'm talking about; if not, it doesn't matter.

Overall: Not spectacular in design, it had the feel of a port from DOS... but
the dupe-checking won my heart. Maybe you could rent it and give it a test
run to see what they've polished in the past several years! :-)
