going back to the original problem: *************begin quote****************** from Jeff Wiseman: ....uunet!tellab5!wiseman OR wiseman@TELLABS.COM I removed the init when I discovered something odd. Remember me mentioning above about the stuffit documents not being marked as such? Well the file typ e that they DID show was "color garfield..". When the folder containing the stuffit application is opened these file type names change to "stuffit document..". The problem is, now that the init is removed from the system, th is problem still exists. I have used FixDeskTop to rebuild the desktop file but it has not eliminated the problem. Anyone have any other ideas on this one? *****************end quote***************** This still sounds more like the old "bundle bit" problem. When "Garfield" was downloaded, it arrived with its bundle bit set, and now *claims* a number of files. Use Bund-aid or ResEdit to clear the problem. I have my comm ptogram (Red Ryder9.X) set to bring files in under the default of MS Word files. This sometimes affects how Stuffit's .SIT files can be opened. If the oringinal archive is identified as a SIT archive, double clicking works. If I have to rename the incoming file to NNNNNN.SIT, I usually have to open Stuffit and then open the file.
