[comp.sys.mac.apps] CricketDraw

chh9@quads.uchicago.edu (Conrad Halton Halling) (10/20/90)

Whatever happened to CricketDraw? Is it still available, and if so,
from whom? I like CricketDraw better than MacDraw II, but the version I
have has alot of annoying bugs. MacConnection and other software houses
don't seem to sell CricketDraw any more.

The last upgrade I received from Cricket was 1.1, I think. CricketDraw
gradually became too cumbersome, esp. compared to more recent drawing
packages, and I dumped it when I upgraded to NFNTs and Cricket tech.
support informed they had no plans to support an "undocumented format".
I read somewhere that it was to be superceded by a completely new
program, but I never received any notice of such. Cricket was bought
out (by Computer Associates?). In any case, I found FreeHand to be
more than equivalent, not to mention faster, friendlier and more reliable.
The new Adobe Illustrator (version 3) also looks good (from the reviews;
I haven't received my upgrade yet). (I tried, but abandoned, Canvas along
the way. I figure if its important to my work, I'll spend the money once
and be done with it. Hence, a small number of high-end packages :-)

Two MacWorld Expos ago, I saw a demo for Cricket (excuse me--CA/Cricket)
Stylist, which appeared to be an upgrade or rework of Draw. Evidently,
Computer Associates bought Cricket, and their products have languished ever
since. I've recently read that someone else has purchased (I think) Graph,
so possibly Draw will follow.

BTW, Stylist's screen updates were still slow as molasses. Haven't these
guys heard of offscreen bitmaps?

I asked this question at our local Mac store a couple weeks ago. They
said that the company the developed Cricket Draw never updated it, that
version 1.1 is the only one. Another company recently bought them out,
so there is speculation that a new version may be available in the future.
Hope this helps!

I believe that the Cricket line was purchased by Computer Associates, a
humongous mostly-mainframe software firm that has been gobbling up
smaller software houses at a predigious rate lately. That may be good
or bad for the Cricket stuff: good--large firm with lots of resources
to upgrade/improve/support it; bad--large firm with lots of resources
could care less about small potatoes Mac software and lets it languish.

I, too, read somewhere that Cricket Draw has been purchased, but I forget
by whom. An update to Draw is now supposedly shipping. No mention of
Stylist.

If anyone wants to try any of the Cricket software cheaply, check out
Software Etc. Prices of most of the Cricket software is $19-$49 for packages
that retail for several hundred dollars.

I saw these prices in Minneapolis. I would buy the whole line, but I
am afraid that they might not work on the Mac IIsi, and that they
will not be supported in the future. Any comments?
