I'd like to point out one danger of "harmonizing" fonts I have experienced. Until very recently, it was not possible to reference fonts by name inside PICT resources. If a user who had made the FONT->NFNT conversion sent a PICT to another user who hadn't made the conversion, or who had different NFNT numbers, then the second user would get either random fonts or the application default. This showed up when we tried to send documents containing equations formed in MathType or Expressionist to other users. The solution was to revert to the unharmonized fonts and get Adobe Type Reunion (since we use ATM). I also note that the MacWrite format, which many people like to tout as a standard WP format, does not reference fonts by name, leading to the same problem.
