[comp.sys.mac.apps] MS WORD: Page View different than

jlhaferman@l_eld01.icaen.uiowa.edu (Jeff Haferman) (11/15/90)

Hi,

When I do a page view or print preview on a document I'm working on
in MS Word 4.0, everything looks the way I want it to be printed.

However, when I laser print it, some captions beneath graphics get
bumped to the next page. Why?

I have widow control off, and I'm only using two fonts - Courier
and Symbol. Both fonts are installed on the LaserWriter. I also
have automatic repagination turned on.

After printing, if I do a page view or print preview, things still
look fine. Any ideas?

Thanks!

What happens is, since the laser fonts in the printer do not (quite)
have the same specs as the bitmaps in the system file, the text does
not line up exactly. If this is a real problem, you should probably
purchase Adobe Type Manager, which comes with those fonts, and install
it. Then, the screen fonts should coordinate more closely to the
laser fonts.

Are you using the "fractional widths" option in the Page Setup? When I
know that I'm going to print on the LaserWriter, I always use this
option. It tries to simulate the spacing of letters in Postscript
fonts. As a matter of fact, I use it also when I print on my
DeskWriter at home (I have ATM).

When you first enter your document, you can turn the option off
because the spacing of characters on the screen makes with the option
on makes editing hard the document. But when you fine-tune the
document right before printing, turn the option on. I think you
have to be using current versions of LaserWriter bitmap fonts
(the NFNT format) for this option to make a difference.

I have added this command to my File menu with the Commands... command
(using Word 4, of course), so now I can activate and deactivate it without
going to the Page Setup dialog.

I'm not positive it's going to settle your problem, but it's worth
trying!
