I'm about to get my first color Mac, and I'd like to get a color paint and/or draw program. This is NOT for professional use--I don't plan to get a color printer, even--it's purely recreational. I'd like something that my 9-year old can handle, so an excellent interface is a must. However, both she and my 12-year old are pretty good artists, so I don't want something that will hold them back. I figure micrometer-precision drawing tools (e.g. Canvas allows positioning up to 1/64000 of an inch) are NOT needed. However, special effects such as gradient-fill, water-drop blending, etc.. sound like a lot of fun to play with, and possibly useful. I'd also like something that can read/write a variety of file formats, but that's a less important consideration. I'm wondering about: Canvas Heard the interface is great, but it's a draw program so it probably lacks "goodies" I want. UltraPaint Has 8 layers, but we find the 2 in SuperPaint confusing enough. PixelPaint Expensive, and I don't know anything about it. VideoPaint The ad sounds great (lots of special effects), but it's $279. Easy Color Paint Cheap but sounds too limited. Studio/8 My son wants this because Studio/1 is his favorite of the B/W programs we have; but it's $295 and I know little else about it. Anything else ...So long as it does 8-bit color. How about it, net users? Remember this is for fun and artistic purposes, not professional use. Please, I really want to hear your opinions. [Unfortunately the local library only gets MacWorld, so pointers to reviews elsewhere won't help me.] I can probably stretch to $300 for a really really great program, but that's enough of a stretch that I'd really want to know beforehand what I was getting. Please E-mail to me and I'll summarize; or post if you think it's of general interest. I thank you, my wife thanks you, my kids thank you, my dog thanks you...oops, we don't have a dog.... -- Dave Matuszek (dave@prc.unisys.com) -- Unisys Corp. / Paoli Research Center / PO Box 517 / Paoli PA 19301 -- Any resemblance between my opinions and those of my employer is improbable. < You can put a mouse on an IBM.
