Hi, One of our postdocs, seems to have an interesting problem with the work he is doing. It involves MS Word. Here is the problem. He runs a FORTRAN program on one of our Vaxs and generates output that is made up of four columns of results. He then uses FTP through Telnet to transfer the file from the Vax to his Mac. The file is opened in Microsoft Word 4.0A. Given that each of the four columns are now out of line, he uses Change to convert the spaces into tabs. First he use 20 spaces in the from section and ^t in the to section and here something happens. At some point during the change, he is beeped and informed in a dialog box that either Serious Disk Error on File or Unrecoverable Disk Error on File There is a button with OK in it and upon clicking this option, the Change is completed succesfully. When I was asked to have a look at the file, this error happened twice, once at twenty spaces (the first change) and once at about twelve. I tried taking the original file and making a copy of it in case the exact place on the hard disk where the original file was located was corrupted, but in fact it got worse with the button only returning the error message and finally forcing me to reboot the Mac. I have run disk checking programs on the Mac without any success in finding a problem and there are no viruses according to Disinfectant 2.4 and SAM. The machine is a IIcx 5/80 running 6.0.4, Word 4.0A, Telnet 2.3.2. Can anyone help. Thanx in advance... nick guoth ndg503@csc.anu.edu.au or nickg@rsc3.anu.edu.au
