[comp.sys.mac.apps] Sour on SUM *and* Microcom 911

I had a situation where DiskExpress II detected corruption on my file system
that NEITHER of these could detect, let alone fix.

1stAid detected that there were blocks allocated that were not part of any file,
and by using both 1staid and sector collector, was able to get the blocks
back in the free state. SUM did not even detect this!

However, there was more trouble lurking there! according to DiskExpress Support,
DE found that two files thought they owned the same blocks (something fsck
finds nicely in UNIX). the only solution seemed to be to reinitialize
the FS and copy the data back. I don't know which files were corrupted, though.

The second condition I had made me see how weak SUM's approach of saving the
file system directory is - I had corruption creep in to the directory of one of my
FSs, and SUM faithfully copied the bad data! when I couldn't reboot because of the corruption,
copying the saved version didn't help since the duplicate was faulty too!

with all the competition for utilities out there, is someone better?

>>Two files occupying the same block<<<
>> Disk Express II<<<<

I've heard of this occuring many times with Disk Express II.My father had
it
happen-and ended up having to reinitize his hard drive. I've hear of quite
a few people having the same thing happen. I don't know if it is Disk
Express or not-but I won't use it -and my dad quit using it too.
Try Mac Tools Opitmizer-it works great & will prioitize the applications
too.
