A friend has a Mac IIcx with an internal 40MB disk. He purchased one of those new CMS Enhancement RM45 removable 45MB hard cartiridge drives. As soon as he installed the removable, his 40MB internal crashed. He was unable to boot off of it or see it's icon after booting on system floppy. He then used Norton utils to recover what he could off of the disk. It actually restored most of the files that were important without any warning or error messages. These files consist of his business Quicken, MS Word, and Excel files. The types and creators are all set correctly, and the file icons appear as expected. If you double click on a MS word file it opens MS word but the error message, "File is of wrong type, opening as text" appears and the file is just garbage. If you open one of the excel documents, you just get a blank spreadsheet with just some random garbage. If you try to open the quicken files you get the message "XXX is not a valid quicken file". We have tried copying, renaming, different computer, different copies of MS word, Excel, Quicken, etc... All this with no luck. What is strange is that other files recovered by Norton (games, etc) all work JUST FINE. It appears that only the document files are trashed. Any ideas!? Mark - Please reply to: ws7m!ws7m@hub.ucsb.edu
