I am writing a large document in Word 4 and I am splitting it into multiple sections. I cannot figure out from any documentation how to get Word to automatically insert a section number in a header or footer. Its obvious how to getthe page number, but I would like to number my pages with a scheme of "Page X.n" where "X" is the section number and "n" is the relative page number of that section. I cannot figure out how to get "X" other than hard-coding it in the header. Anyone have a solution? Also, does anyone know if there is a way to force a section to have a particular number, i.e., I want my intial section, the cover page and table of contents to be section 0 and section 1 to be my first chapter. Thanks in advance, Howard Moskovitz --------------------------------- | Howard Moskovitz | | Locus Computing | | Inglewood, CA | ---------------------------------

Word 4 does not have a variable for section number as it does for page number. You'll have to hard-code it.

Problem: creating an index or table of contents that shows the sextion as well as the page number. I.E. Chapter 14 ........14-1 Biorhythyms ......14-3 I solved the table of contents as follows: Highlite the listing for the first section; Use the "change" dialogue box and change "...??" to ".2-??"; then click in the "change selection" box. Note that I use the dotted leader tabs to provide the "....." between the header and the page number, and this allows me to set some known characters as the beginning of the "find" string. This is necessary when using the "?" as a wild card in the find command. Otherwise the command will *find* every character in the hilited area. (Find "?" will *find* every ASCII character, including spaces; find "a ?b" will find every occurrence of an "a" followed by a space followed by any character.) Hope this is of some help. ______________________________________________________________ | Rick McCormack | IMAGISTICS BUSINESS THEATRE TECHNOLOGY | | Vancouver, BC | Information transfer - with a purpose. | | CANADA | ________________________________________ | | AOL: Rique | INTERACTIVE COMPREHENSIVE ENLIGHTENING | |________________|____________________________________________|
