I have a user with a mac IIci that is posessed. This machine went through 2 80 meg. HDs in it's first 6 months of life. Now it's software. When running applications, after a few hours it just begins to slow down. Even if only one application is running, this occures. When you check "About the finder", the system is using all available memory. In this last case, WhiteKnight was using 1000k, finder 250k (yes I increased it) and the system (6.0.5) gobbeled up the rest! Virus scans show nothing, the machine is running Virex init 1.82 (the latest) anyway. The assemblage of cdevs is not too uncommon. The only questionables might be sundesk or Coach. I've reinstalled the system, pulled out cdevs, increased the heap, the finder, and cursed some. Any suggestions. I've not seen or heard of this in the past. rbrink@hubcap.clemson.edu

In msg 2798 rick Brink complains of slowdown on Iici after some use. When you reinstalled the system software did you replace the system file? Sometimes just running the installer wont fix a corrupted system file. Also, have you checked for a corrupted font? A bad font will do unpredictable things to a Mac. good luck.

There is a known bug in the 512 ROMS (IIci/si/fx). It will cause a slowdown of your Mac if the application makes excessive calls to the memory manager. If you have memory hogs, watch out for slowdown. Apple is working on it. maurice -- Maurice Sharp MSc. Does anyone have more complete information on this problem. We feel the need for speed and are considering upgrading to fx's but we run large (> 6 meg) Smalltalk images and if this is a real problem we may have to go with SPARCstations. Apple This is unlikely to be the cause of this particular problem. The Memory Manager bug does not cause the System Heap to fill up. Also, the Memory Manager bug only affects programs that allocate a lot of non-relocatable blocks, which only affects a small fraction of programs. -- Larry Rosenstein, Object Specialist Apple Computer, Inc. 20525 Mariani Ave, MS 3-PK Cupertino, CA 95014 AppleLink:Rosenstein1 domain:lsr@Apple.COM UUCP:{sun, voder, nsc, decwrl}!apple!lsr
