[comp.sys.mac.apps] Re^2: Equations - better way than Word?

So can MathType (mentioned earlier, including the original posting), however
the original poster apparently didn't like the switching back and forth. On
this subject, it's not necessary to go to the Apple menu each time -- just
leave part of the window showing behind the WP document and click on it. Both
Expressionist and MathType run as applications under MultiFinder. MathType has
the advantage that the DA just opens the application under MultiFinder -- very
handy.

This can be fixed with an FKEY which pastes the graphic (i.e. expression) into
the document and adjusts the subscript to get the vertical alignment correct.
It's PD and free. The author reads this group and the FKEY was discussed about
a month ago. It's probably on an ftp server somewhere as well. You still have
to [Cmd-Shift-Spacebar] to return to the normal baseline afterwards, but the
operation is reduced to two keystrokes instead of several. I've tried it and
it works well. Highly recommended to people who already have Word.

If you don't already have Word, and you want to use a mathematical expression
editor with a Word Processor, get something that uses the baseline information,
e.g. WriteNow, Nisus. Alternatively, watch this space for a review of
MathType 2.0 which purports to do both jobs.

BTW, Neither MathType or Expressionist are typesetters -- TeX (in its various
incarnations) is the only typesetter I know of on the Mac (there is Interleaf,
but I think its a bit over the top for what most PC {in the generic sense}
users want or need). I call them expression editors to differentiate between
the different applications. Have you tried MathType? IMHO, it is marginally
better than Expressionist (other reviewers agree -- I can cite references, but
I don't really want to get into a preference war here -- they're both good
products).

I posted a review of Mathematical Expression editors a couple of months ago. I
have a beta release of MathWriter 2.0 (mentioned earlier) which is the first
serious attempt at a fully integrated Mathematical Word Processor on the Mac,
and will post a review when it is released. I haven't had much of a look at it
yet, but its features are impressive on paper.
