[comp.sys.mac.apps] Running MS-DOS on a Mac IIci

SteveSgt@cup.portal.com (Steven Eugene Sergeant) (01/09/91)

As far as I know right now, there's only one company making an Intel
(MS-DOS) coprocessor card for the Macintosh II series. The company is
called "Orange Micro". The boards were originally designed by AST.
They have three models, one is called the Mac86, and contains a 640kB
8086 that installs into a Mac SE. Another is called Mac286, and it
functions as a 640kB 80286 (AT class) clone. There is now also a
Mac386 that operates as a 1mB 80386.
I have heard conflicting reports on how compatible these boards are. I
have recently seen the Mac286 on sale here in Silicon Valley for $595,
but I think the list price is around $1300. The Mac386 sells for over
$2000.
Unless you really need the speed, a better solution might be to buy
"Insignia Solutions" program "SoftPC". It emulates an original IBM-PC
in software. It runs at a respectable speed on a Mac IIci. From the
users point of view (as opposed to the installer's) there's not much
difference in the way these two appear on the screen. SoftPC sells
for under $300 on the street.

Let us know what you decide to do...
