I've seen articles here about a shareware DA called BinHqx for doing the .hqx translations. I found it a SUMEX, ftp'd it, dehexed it and unstuffed it. Everything went well with no indications of problems. The docs file indicated no unusual actions required to install it. The version number indicated is 1.0. I rebooted, then tried to open BinHqx. I see the BinHqx menu item in the menu bar for about half a second, then the menu bar reverts to whatever was there before I tried to open the DA. BinHqx is nowhwere to be found; but when I try to remove it with Font/DA Mover, it claims that BinHqx is active and cannot be removed. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any ideas? Thanx in advance for any help here! Larry Gilmore gilmore@venice.sedd.trw.com

I haven't heard of this problem yet, but there is a problem with BinHqx running on a 68000 based machine. It basically arises from certain requirements that the 68000 has that the 68020 and 68030 no longer have. On a 68000 Mac (plus, SE, Classic, ...) the DA will crash as soon as you open it. This is a compiler error, but has been corrected. Other errors have been isolated and corrected, these were programmer (my) errors. There's still one bug left that I'm trying to tie down before I release v1.01. Sorry for all the problems that this may have caused you all. -Howard Author BinHqx physi-hf@garnet.berkeley.edu

For those of you who don't like StuffIt 1.6, but who can't live without the BinHex capability of StuffIt 1.5.1, here's and idea. Take Compactor (a great program whose praises have been deservedly sung in this group) and install the BinHqx DA into the application. Then, you don't have the DA cluttering up your apple menu all the time, but you can get to it when you need it. In case some of you are unfamiliar with the procedure for installing a DA into an application, it's easy. When you have the DA suitcase open and are about to open the suitcase you wish to copy the DA to, just hold down the option button and press "Open." This will allow you to open up any file in the Hard Drive (or floppy), and install a DA into it. It works really well, and now I have all my tools in one place. The preceding was another fine product of the fevered brain of wirehead@oxy.edu "When you need a warped opinion, and you care enough to send only the very best...choose wirehead." fnordfnordfnordfnordfnordfnordfnordfnordfnordfnord
