Hi. A friend of mine was looking into buying Soft PC so he could run PC-Tex on his Mac. I told him I thought there was a version of Tex which runs directly on the Mac, and would probably be a better choice. Can someone tell me if there's LaTex for the Mac, and where to get it? Thanks! -Ralph rgonzal@chowder.rutgers.edu

Thanks for all the responses. In case someone else is interested, the consensus is that there are two options for TeX on the Mac: (1) OzTeX is freeware available by anonymous ftp from midway.uchicago.edu or giza.ohio-state.edu. Apparently it is quite good. (2) TeXtures is a commercial version which uses standard Macintosh fonts for better or worse. -Ralph

Yes, there are two versions of TeX (hence LaTeX) for the Mac: Textures, a commercial version from Blue Sky Software. OzTeX, a public-domain version, which can be FTPed from midway.uchicago.edu, giza.cis.ohio-state.edu, and other places. I use OzTeX; let me know if you have more questions about it. -- -- Jim Walker 76367.2271@compuserve.com walker@math.scarolina.edu

There is also a version available by FTP (OzTeX): (from frequently asked questions in comp.text.tex) OzTeX is a public domain version of TeX for the Macintosh. A DVI Previewer and PostScript driver are also included. It should run on any Macintosh Plus, SE, II, or newer model, but will not work on a 128K or 512K Mac. It was written by Andrew Trevorrow, and is available via anonymous ftp from from midway.uchicago.edu (128.135.12.73) in ./pub/OzTeX, which contains other public domain TeX-related software for the Mac as well. Questions about OzTeX may be directed to oztex@midway.uchicago.edu.
