First, thanks to all the people who replied my mail. Programs recommended most are: 1. Boomerang 2. Disinfectant 3. SuperClock 4. GateKeeper 5. Compact Pro 6. INIT CDEV 7. StuffIt 8. Moire Below is the list of all the freewares and sharewares mentioned in the relpy. Numbers after ":" are the number of times the program was mentioned. Please feel free to add programs you like. Also, are all these programs available in sumex? Please indicate if you know any programs that's not in sumex. Thanks Peter Liu ========================================================= Freeware: Disinfectant 2.4.: 5 Disinfectant catches all known viruses, its INIT is 100% compatible--in short, John Norstad is greatly to be praised for producing it. And it's totally free. GateKeeper & GateKeeper Aid: 3 virus protection MacCompress: 1 compression program Public Folder: 1 A really good way to share files across an AppleTalk network. It doesn't provide the services of AppleShare, but it makes it easy to grab a file or set of files off another Mac in the office. ResEdit 2.1: 1 edit your resources (customize menus, icons, etc.) SuperClock! 3.9.: 4 Puts a clock in the menu bar. Also gives timer and alarm features. Almost totally compatible. Vaccine: 1 Shareware: AppMenu: 1 gives you a popup menu of applications in MultiFinder (nicer than dragging down to the end of the apple menu). AppleSizer: 1 $19.95 If you do a lot juggling of applications AppSizer can be very handy. It lets you assign the MultiFinder memory partition size for an app as it's launch. So you can easily launch some app in a 800K paritition once, then launch it in a 6 MEG partition next - very easily. BinHqxDA 1.02: 1 unbinhex files Boomerang 2.1: 5 for file navigation and more. From the Standard file dialog I can reach many files I use on a recular basis by selecting the file in a menu, create folders, find files and more. cdevshrinker: 1 modifies control panel so you select CDEV's by name rather than by icon (eliminates scrolling through that long list!) Chicago-nice: 1 INIT, replaces standard Chicago font with a font which is similar but (in my opinion) much more attractive. Collapse (FKey): 1 shrinks window to just the title bar (like iconifying) Compact Pro: 3 CptExpand: 1 automagically expands .sit files when you double-click them DialogFilter: 1 With dialogfilter I don't have to use the mous in modal dialogs. Typing a single key will do the job. Diskeeper 1.2: 1 scan and report on duplicate files, empty files and folders on disk FileList 1.4: 1 disk librarian program init cdev: 3 init manager Init Scope and Init Tracker: 1 for analyzing init behavior. KeyMenu: 1 lets me walk in the menus with the numeric keypad and the arrow keys. McSink: 1 mcvert: 2 text file utility/da Moire (cdev): 2 screen saver Programmer's Key: 1 eliminates the need to stretch around the computer to get at the programmer's switch. It emulates the swith right on the keyboard. QuickView (DA): 1 text/binary file viewer Remember(?): 1 Scroll2: 1 nicer scrollbars following - NeXT like windows from B/W macs SitExpand: 1 sound Manager Package: 1 StuffIt 1.5.1: TheNews: 1 Tidyitup: 1 organizes/groups icons in the system folder Unscrolly: 1 changes control panel to display cdevs by name instead of icons Commercial Programs mentioned: HandsOff: 1 ATM: 1 Norton Util: 1 Suitcase or Masterjuggler: 1 SmartScrap: 1
