I hope this is not a reposting, but I had some problems with the previous posting. We are going to buy an utility package for our Macs. We are considering SUM II vs. Norton Utilities. We would appreciate any comment and information about each of this packages and/or comparison between them. Suggestions about other similar packages are also welcome. ---------------------------------------------------- | Informatica Sistemi S.p.A | ////////////// | via Mercantesse, 3 | // I.S. // | 20021 Baranzate MI (Italia) | ////////////// | | | E-Mail : morgaine@polluce.SUBLINK.ORG | ----------------------------------------------------

It can recover some files from damaged disks, but has not been able to repair disk problems. I saved all the damaged disks I could not fix with SUM and ordered Norton. I just got Norton this week and was able to quickly and easily repair every disk. I was impressed. Norton recognized more problems than SUM and corrected them. I also found Norton more intuitive to use than SUM II. I ran SUM on the hard drive of my IIcx and it said all was fine. I ran Norton and it came back indicating some file problems (bundle bits and other things) and corrected these things. SUM does an okay job of file recovery, but Norton is much better for repairing the disk itself. For my position, I need to have a variety of utility programs, but if I had to choose just one, I would choose Norton. It has been discussed in one of these Newsgroups before, but if you run SUM and Norton against a damaged drive, each will inturn report and fix damage the other supposedly fixed. This does not sit well, but your other points about Norton seem to be echoed by others. tim. ------------------------------------------------------------- Tim Endres | time@ice.com ICE Engineering | uupsi!ice.com!time 8840 Main Street | Voice FAX Whitmore Lake MI. 48189 | (313) 449 8288 (313) 449 9208

Go with Norton Utilities. Much easier to use, not as cryptic, and overall the better program. It should be... Peter Norton all but invented file recovery on the IBM... hope he could do well on a slightly more complex machine... Jonathan Baker Penn State University
