[comp.sys.mac.apps] MS Word w/MultiFinder and MultiSpool

jnsims01@ulkyvx.bitnet (03/05/91)

I have a Mac Classic w/2MB RAM and use Microsoft Word (latest version) for
word processing. Up until two days ago, I had never used Multifinder for
any applications, but then some kind (?) soul recommended MultiSpool. I
downloaded it from RICEVM without problem, and the following events took
place.

* Baseline: I have a special landscape format I use to print 'half-page'
  teaching notes, i.e. two-up on a single 8.5" x 11" sheet, on my Imagewriter
II. Usual print job is is no more than two such sheets, never takes more
  than five minutes.

* Put MultiSpool in my system folder and rebooted, attempted to print.
Print job ran as normal (no discernable spooling). Realized that I needed
to be using MultiFinder (that's why they call it **MULTI**Spool, right?)
Used 'set startup' to start MultiFinder vs. Finder and rebooted.

* Ran the print job again. Total elapsed time to print 1/2 of a sheet now
greater than 20 minutes; printer prints four or five lines at a time and
then pauses for a **LONG** time before the next four or five lines. Go
upstairs and eat lunch while job completes.

* Decide I can probably live without MultiSpool. Remove it and its folder
from the system folder and reboot, still in MultiFinder. Run the print
job again. Same performance: short bursts, long waits. Go upstairs and
play with the kid while job completes

* Use 'set startup' to go back to Finder and reboot. Run the print job, and
everything is now back to normal.

Can anyone suggest what's going on here? I can't believe that un-spooled
MultiFinder should take that long to print, or does it? The spooler would
be a great help to me, but not at that cost in time and frustration! I'd
be happy (well, maybe not happy exactly) if I'm missing something obvious/
stupid, or if I don't have something configured correctly, but I haven't a
clue as to what's wrong. All advice will be greatly appreciated; you can
e-mail or post to the net so others will have the benefit of my screw-up
and your brilliance ;^). Thanks in advance, net persons.
