[comp.sys.mac.apps] Giffer 1.08 question

bclee@.berkeley.edu (Bob C. Lee) (03/02/91)

Hi, I just got a copy of the new Giffer 1.08. I like the new
feature that let you create a startup screen. One problem,
though. When I restarted my Mac with the newly created startup
screen, the picture it showed was missing some colors. It's
like a 256-color picture being converted to a 16-color one.

Well, is it the program or is it my machine? I have a IIci
	running system 6.0.7, btw.

Any suggestion welcome, thanx a bundle!

	G'day,

The problem is not with your machine; the problem is the palette that
the Macintosh defaults to. Apparently the CLUT (color look-up table)
has a standard palette that is used unless some application defines a
new palette (such as what happens when you open a GIF file). I have not
been able to figure out how to change the default palette, and I'm not
sure that I would want to; that might do more harm than good.

To determine (in giffer) what a picture would look like using the Mac
standard palette, use the command "USE DEFAULT PALETTE (Command ])"
under the touchup menu when you have the picture on the screen. This will
change the palette from the one currently being used to the system
standard.

As a side note, I have some spectacular images that I would *love* to
use as a startup screen, but they look terrible under the default
palette. The one I'm using now is the "don't Panic" planet from Douglas
Adams; it fits my state of mind in most cases.

I recently bought NOW Utilities (for Super Boomerang, which is
wonderful, but that's another story). It includes an init/cdev called
"DeskPicture" (apparently an upgraded of the shareware init of almost
the same name). One of the options supplied by DeskPicture is to use
the pallette from the picture instead of the standard system pallette.
(It also will pick a random image from a folder, if you like that sort
of thing.)

Of course, it's probably not worth spending $79 just for this
capability.
