[comp.sys.mac.apps] advice wanted: personal financial software

ktubman@inetg1.Arco.COM (Kenneth M. Tubman (214)754-3871) (03/09/91)

I would like some advice on personal financial software. I would like something
to keep track of a few checking and savings accounts. I would also like to keep
track of credit card balances and loan balances (e.g. car loans). I think the
desire to track loan balances eliminates Quicken. Is that correct?
I would like to track my expenses a bit also. (Where does the money go?)
I plan to buy Wealthbuilder so I don't think I need Managing Your Money.

I'm thinking about MacMoney or Dollars and Sense but I don't know a lot
about them except what I have read in a couple of articles. Are they
easy to use? Is the interface better in one than the other? I would
appreciate any comments on these or other programs.

Thanks.

I am developing a HyperCard stack which I plan to market as shareware. I
developed it for my self (3 bank accounts, several credit cards and loans etc.
It tracks up to 12 of each type (ie assets or liabilities) and records each
transaction, giving instant balances. I can send a copy to you. It also has a
budget tracking module which is still being developed. The balances work, Ive
used them for over a year successfully. Also it reconciles the accounts
according to your statement monthly, can make automatic transactions on the
first of the month, and you can go back and edit an entry which was incorrect.

I own both MacMoney and Dollars & Sense. I started out trying a
copy of Dollars & Sense but ended up buying MacMoney because of the
price difference and support. There were a number of features of the
interfaces that I felt were handled much better in Dollars & Sense,
enough so that I ended up purchasing a copy of D&S 5.0 when it finally came
out.
The major differences that convinced me to change to D&S were:
o The ability to modify ALL aspects of existing accounts including
the starting balance, account type and individual entries.
o The data entry interface for D&S is cleaner and more intuitive.
o The account hierarchy is clearer and easier to set up.

DISCLAIMER I have absolutely NO relationship however tenuous with
Survivor Software, Monogram, or Software Toolworks nor with
the developers of MacMoney and Dollars & Sense.
