Has anyone compared the Norton Utilities to other similar packages? I'm prompted to ask since I just got Disk Express 2.0. It refuses to do anything if the disk is bad; in this case, a bad directory, with a blocks allocated to a file that didn't exist. Apple's Disk First Aid didn't find the problem at all, while SUM found it but said it couldn't fix it. I'm wondering if NU would have done a better job? (I solved my problem by running Disk Express 1.5, which didn't complain and rebuilt the directory, thereby fixing the error :-) -- Frank Kolnick, Basis Computer Systems Inc. According to this week's issue of InfoWorld, Norton Utilities for the Macintosh will NEVER be released. It was scheduled for release this summer, but will never find it's way to shelves because SYMANTEC bought out Norton Utilities corp. The article went on to say that the "best features" of Norton Utils for the Mac will be integrated into the next release of SUM. Bob PS: It might amuse you to know that the new version of Norton Utilities for the PC has been delayed because SYMANTEC marketing didn't like the way the package looked. ... And people wonder why I don't like SYMANTEC...

The product will be shipped just as soon as all of show-stopper bugs have been removed. The last month and a half of testing and compatibility rewrites were mostly caused by compatibility with other products (Note: there is a company in southern Washington state that has caused much of this.) I can't put words in their mouths, but it will be in the next month unless something REALLY severe is discovered. The product is extremely thorough-going and most professional. It will sell to anyone with even the slightest interest in any of the fuctionality provided. It is easy to use and well thought out. >PS: It might amuse you to know that the new version of Norton Utilities >for the PC has been delayed because SYMANTEC marketing didn't like the >way the package looked. ... I don't know where IW got this, but there's not a shred of truth to it. NUM has been out on the streets for about a week already. At some future time there may be some sort of mingling of SUM and NUM, but that's a long way off. For the foreeable future, NUM will be an independent product, and I hear it selling like hot cakes. >It was scheduled for release this >summer, but will never find it's way to shelves because SYMANTEC bought >out Norton Utilities corp. Symantec had nothing to do with it. We were just squashing those last few pesky bugs. We wanted to make sure this was a totally solid product before we shipped it. That was the reason for the delay, not the Symantec merger. >The article went on to say that the "best >features" of Norton Utils for the Mac will be integrated into the next >release of SUM. As I said, some kind of product merger might happen someday, but it's not in the cards for the short term. It is possible (likely?) that just the opposite will happen and SUM will be absorbed into NUM. Or maybe they will stay out there as high-end/low-end products. Those decisions have not been made yet. >PS: It might amuse you to know that the new version of Norton Utilities >for the PC has been delayed because SYMANTEC marketing didn't like the >way the package looked. This is also completely untrue. The fact is that Symantec DID change the package design we had originally planned (though only a little bit), but this had no effect on the release of the DOS utilities whatsoever. In fact 5.0 went out the door like clockwork, just as we had planned. No big delays, no problems. It's pretty unusual for a major software project huh? > ... And people wonder why I don't like >SYMANTEC... Actually, the software development side of PNCI has been virtually untouched by the merger (by design). They don't want to mess up a good team with ways of getting things done that work. Around here we like them just fine.

Oh, yeah, and the Norton Utilities for System V is out, too. (That's not a "true" Norton product, but it's got Peter's name all over it.) Three products in the last month. Not bad, hey? And I have had independent sightings of NUM from back East, so no-one can complain that it's a "vapor product". I'm quite proud of my contributions to Norton's products. I helped (he said, with characteristic modesty) with beta-ing and bug-stomping. You will like the product, if you want any of the parts it has. Re: Norton Utilities $49 special offer Mr. Liao - While Norton Utilities 1.0 is not completely compatible with System 7.0, most of the package works just fine. Here's a break-down of what 7.0 beta users can expect: Norton Disk Doctor Will not work with any drive that has been "touched" by System 7.0. Specifically, NDD will not perform repairs on volumes containing aliases. FileSaver Deleted file tracking is incompatible with System 7.0 when FileShare is enabled. Volume protection works fine. UnErase, Format Recover No problems. Speed Disk Works fine. Minor incompatibility with bad block handling, but this does not affect optimization. Norton Disk Editor Works fine. Fast Find Works fine. Since Desktop Manager is active in System 7.0 and the old desktop file is no longer used in most cases, launching files sometimes requires an extra step (selecting the launching application). KeyFinder Works fine, but does not take advantage of TrueType. DiskLight Works fine. Directory Assistance Layout Plus Incompatible, and in some cases redundant, since much of their functionality has already been incorporated directly into System 7.0. Bottom line, the Norton Utilities for the Macintosh is still the best data recovery software out there, System 7.0 or not. Most of our modules work just fine running under the 7.0 Betas, but for those features that don't work, you can expect that we will have an update out before 7.0 ships (but probably not before the $49 offer expires). I can't say for certain, but it is my guess that the upgrade price to get the new version will still make the $49 offer a good value, especially since you get to use the rest of the package for the time being. But don't take my word for it, ask someone who is already using the software. :-) -Marvin Carlberg Macintosh Development Peter Norton Computing/Symantec

It's nice to know that Norton was well-written enough not to flake big chunks when running under System 7. I like Norton a lot (definitely much better than SUM II!) and am eagerly awaiting the upgrade to the System 7 compatible version. By the way, does anyone know what the latest version of Speed Disk is? Someone told me earlier versions caused some hard drives to flake out badly (crash?), and I haven't been able to get more info on this. Willy Liao labc-1ic@web.berkeley.edu
