[comp.sys.mac.apps] System 7.0 and Suitcase--SUMMARY

dave@PRC.Unisys.COM (David Lee Matuszek) (03/25/91)

Last week I asked:

>Is the 15 DAs/15 fonts restriction gone in System 7.0? Or do I still
>need Suitcase? Does Suitcase even work?
>
>To minimize bandwidth, please e-mail answers. If nobody posts the
>answers I'll post a summary. Thanks.

Summary:

The 15 DA limit is gone.

I got a number of replies to the effect that not only there was not a
limit on the number of fonts, but that there NEVER HAD BEEN. I found
this more than a little surprising, since my original reason for
purchasing Suitcase was to get access to more fonts (I've never been a
big DA fan).

So I did a little checking, and found that in fact the limit was 20,
not 15, and the limit was actually on the number of items in a menu.
For the programs I used at the time, this of course meant that only 20
of the installed fonts were available. This limit went away when
scrolling menus were introduced. (Trivia question: Which System
introduced scrolling menus?)

So to everyone who told me there had never been a limit on the number
of fonts: You're right in theory, but in practice the limit was 20.

Finally, there is general agreement that Suitcase is still of some
use, since it allows you to organize your fonts into suitcases, thus
reducing System Folder clutter. That's nice, I guess, but not
something I'd pay money for. It also allows installation of sounds
and FKEYs, but I have better utilities for that.

Thanks to all who replied!

When I was young, my family bought a color TV. Our neigbors, who
were poorer, had only a black-and-white set. They bought a piece of
cellophane, red on top, yellow in the middle, and blue on the bottom,
and taped it over their screen, so they could claim that they had a
color TV, too.
  Now there's Windows 3.0.

It was the infamous System 3.0 (the one that randomly destroyed resource
files), shipped with the new Mac Plus in January 1986.

Now that we have figure out that Suitcase is useful under 7.0+ (in
my case it allows me to distribute font files outside the system file),
how do we get ATM 2.0 to work under system 7.0B4+? When system boots,
ATM's icon is crossed out, then it complains about either not having enough
memory or not the right resources (in a "one dialog box that covers all
problems"). Has anyone figured this out yet? The Apple fonts are OK, but
I'd love to use the Adobe fonts. They still look better printed out!

OK, I have (I hope) a solution, followed by another problem.

I had the same problem when I was using 70b1. The solution was to make
suitcase load after atm. This is not as simple as adding a ~ in front of
suitcases name since, at least under b1 (I havent checked this under b4),
the system loaded all the inits from the extensions folder (where suitcase
is by default) followed by those in the control panels folder. So, I had to
rename suitcase and put it in the c.p. folder.

Now, at the same time as I switched to b4, I upgraded suitcase to 1.29
(from 1.28) and the problem went away. I wasn't sure which upgrade caused
the fix, but it seems (from the fact that you are having the problem even
under b4) that it was the suitcase upgrade that caused the fix.

Now the new problem, at the same time as moving to 70b4 I got the newest
version of silverlining (5.28) which has 32-bit clean drivers. Unfortunately,
atm (2.0) dies on me in 32-bit addressing mode. Specifically, as soon as
any application gets to the point of drwaing any atm-rendered text it quits
with the error message:

The application "unknown" has quit because an error of type 1 occurred.

I get this message (with the "unknown") independent of the application that
died.

I called adobe tech and they said they had had no problems with 7.0b4 but when
I pressed about 32-bit mode the tech admitted she wasn't sure. She said she
sort of remembered something about 32 bit (though for a while she was confused
and insisted that atm works fine "with 32 bit quickdraw"). She said she
would have a senior tech call me tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.
