[comp.sys.mac.apps] SCSI tape backup systems

jft@caen.engin.umich.edu (juei feng tu ) (03/26/91)

I am going to buy a tape backup system for MAC II. In order to save money
I am going to buy a used one. Some one is selling a SCSI tape system used
to be used for a SUN shoebox. My question:

Can I use it with a MAC II? What kind of driver I need?

Thank you in advance.

Should be possible.

I have a Tandberg Data TDC3620 running, using FastBackII.
All the problems I have seem to be bugs in the software (FastBackII
cannot backup an 80 megabyte HD to 60 megabyte tapes, it seems).

Ahem. I assure you that Fastback II *can* back up 80 MBytes onto a
60 MByte tape. I do it all the time. Data compression makes it
possible. If you're having trouble with your tape drive, please
email the details to me and maybe I can help.

[Part author of Fastback II, but not the tape driver.]

True. First time I tried a backup of 80 MB of text files. Worked.
Next I tried an 80 MB disk filled with Text files compressed with
DiskDoubler and lots of GIF format pictures.
FastBack II did not compress it any further, of course.

But worse, FastBackII made me loose my data: after filling the first
tape, the Backup dialog told me to "change the cartridge when it stops"
and then to "insert volume <number 2>". I did insert a second tape and
FastBackII reportet to write another 20 MB to it.
No warnings, no error messages; only completion messages.

But even after reading the manual - page by page - I did not find out
how to restore the data from the first tape. The second tape restores
fine.

[I received your private email, but I was unable to reply. The mail
bounced back to me no matter what return path I tried to use. Sorry.]

Sounds like Fastback did exactly what it was supposed to do!

Just put it into the tape drive! Did you try that and it didn't work?

As I said, I didn't write the tape drive code. I think, but I'm not
certain, that you might run into trouble if you put the wrong kind of
tape into your tape drive. Try contacting Fifth Generation Systems
technical support. They keep track of things like that, and they'll
probably be able to tell you what to do.
