Is there a version of 'framemaker' on the Macintosh? If so, I am interested in hearing people's experiences with it. Since it is available on sundry workstation platforms, it would fantastic if it were also available for the Macintosh. Thanks in advance! john lee.

There is a version of FrameMaker running on the Mac. I've
been receiving promotional materials on it for a while,
including a "demo" disk, which only recites its features.
There's also a $100 rebate form; the program costs in
the $800 range without the rebate.

I believe educational customers can get it for less ($500?). Call Frame Technologies at (408) 433-3311 for more info. I specifically bought a Mac Portable because it was the only portable which would run FrameMaker. FrameMaker runs slow since it is only a 68000 based machine but it runs circles around FrameMaker on our Sun 3/50's which are 68020 based machines. I've tried running it on a Mac+ but it is just too slow (as is everything else on a plus) and the screen is too small. At least with the Portable, I get a full page width screen. I use it for documenting and also for code editing. I found that 2.2 Meg of memory assures me that I don't get any "out of memory" messages. Even though the Portable has no memory management unit, a crash is handled in a much nicer manner than on a Sun. I found a common defect between the platforms. On the Sun, it makes FrameMaker just disappears with all your unsaved work. On the Mac, a dialog comes up which allows you to save everything before the application quits. If you're running the same version number of FM on different platforms, the files may be transferred between environments without any problems (unless you are using local fonts). For me, FrameMaker is the only application I would use for documenting on a Mac (and I've tried a few). Version 3.0 is coming out which supports tables in a big way and conditional text. It is also supposed to be faster. Hope this helps, Rob
