[comp.sys.mac.apps] SuperLaserSpool and System 7.0

drg@mdaali.mda.uth.tmc.edu (David Gutierrez) (04/20/91)

Has anyone had success in using SuperLaserSpool with System 7.0? I've
tried SLS 2.02 with System 7.0FC1 and have not been able to make it work.
I've tried putting SLS in the Extensions folder and I've tried it in the
System Folder, with and without an alias in the Extensions folder. (And
yes, I have removed PrintMonitor from the System Folder.) In every
combination I've tried, printing anything (bit-mapped fonts, TrueType
fonts, PostScript fonts) causes my Mac to hang.

I haven't reported this to Fifth Generation Systems (the new owners ofr
SLS) because when I called them last week to tell them that SLS wouldn't
work with Full Impact, they kept me on hold for 47 minutes before I could
get in touch with tech support. The tech I talked to said that 47 minutes
wasn't bad for them. He couldn't help me with that problem, either; he
didn't seem to know much about SLS.

It looks to me as though FGS has bitten off more than they can chew with
their recent software acquisitions. It may be time to let SuperLaserSpool
die off (and maybe SuitCase, too). Anybody know how to make SuitCase II remember which suitcases you have open and automatically open them when you reboot?

NNNOOOOOO!!!! I bought SuperLaserSpool for use with my DeskWriter -
and I love it. Keep it alive, FGS!

David,

SLS 2.02 is NOT System 7.0 compatible and it's my understanding that FGS is
working on an update/upgrade.

Please be patient and give them time.

Does anyone know how this "upgrade" will apply for the Dataframe specific
version of SLS (which is free but only runs when your Mac is attached
to one of the SuperMac hard drives)? Am I going to have to buy the
full package to get system 7 deskwriter spooling?

Thanks,

Brion,

You'll need to contact Fifth Generation Systems about updates/upgrades to the
"DataFrame-specific" ("df") version of SLS.

David,

Remember that PrintMonitor ***ONLY*** supports LaserWriters and there are
a lot of ImageWriters, AppleTalk ImageWriters, StyleWriters, and DeskWriters
that are not supported; whereas, SLS supports a wider range of printers.

*I* can give them all the time they need, but if I have to teach a couple
of dozen (or more) non-technical users to use PrintMonitor when they
switch to System 7, they're probably not going to want to change *again*
when the new version of SLS becomes available.

True, but most of our users here use laser printers. In my position, I'm
more interested in the greatest good for the greatest number. I love
SuperLaserSpool and have been recommending it for years, but I don't look
forward to having my phone ringing constantly with people asking me to fix
their spoolers after they upgrade to System 7.0. SLS won't be the only
product that we have this problem with, but it's one I'm concerned about,
because it's one of my favorites.

I should amplify the second part of my original posting.

I should have made it clear that I meant I wanted to do this under System
7.0. It's a default option of Suitcase II - it just doesn't work for me
under System 7.0.
