[comp.sys.mac.apps] Need advice on accounting package

thisted@galton.uchicago.edu (Ronald A. Thisted) (05/03/91)

I am in the market for a good small-business accounting package that
will handle payroll, general ledger, and accounts payable, with
flexible reporting and automatic check writing. The setting is a
not-for-profit organization with one part-time paid office staff member (an
administrator/secretary). I am the (volunteer) treasurer, and
I find after a year and a half that I have pushed Quicken to its
limits and beyond.

The two contenders
seem to be atOnce and Accountant. The latter costs about 30% more
than the former. Does anyone have any experience comparing the two
(or comparing to other accounting packages)? I would like to set up a
system and then have it run by a non-accounting person (possibly a
volunteer).

I will summarize and post any email replies that I receive.

There are other programs to consider. I just received the most recent
upgrade to MultiLedger and it looks like CheckMark Software does
listen to its customers (i.e. significant upgrades). M.Y.O.B. has
gotten good reviews in the magazines recently and is inexpensive
<$200. I have a 1-1/2 year old demo disk for atOnce and probably
would have purchased it except it didn't have any inventory control
capability. I don't know what the program is like now that PeachTree
Software is handling it. BTW, you can get a MultiLedger demo disk
for free from CheckMark Software. E-Mail me if you need the Ph #.
