I am interested in exchanging files with a mac using 720k MS-dos floppies. Recently, I found a program on fuug.fi that would mount dos floppies as if they were Mac floppies. Unfortunately, it won't work on our Mac fx. The program is in: 82 -rw-rw-r-- 1 205 41579 Jan 24 1990 dosmounterdemo.sit It is a demo called DOS Mounter of a commercial product. Of course, nobody would spend money on a program if the demo won't work. Is there a more recent demo out there ? Or another product which will do the same ? Or am I stuck with the Apple file exchange ? You must have an old version of DosMounter. I just used it a few minutes ago on my Mac IIfx and it worked fine. By the way, I was also running under System 7.0. I asked about a product called Dos Mounter, of which I had the demo version which didn't work for me. Here are the responses I received. To sum it up: - Get Access PC which is superior. - Make sure that the disks are called DEMO etc. (this was correct). - My problem is not with the machine, but probably with the screen size (this machine has a large screen). Hack the executable, get a hacked version, or buy the real program. As the machine is not mine (it belongs to my group, and is password protected so I need its manager to try anything), I will decide what to do together with our local Mac manager. Lasley <lasleyse@wam.umd.edu> I used the demo version 0.9 for about a year on my SE/30 and several IIcx's and IIci's under System 6.0.x without any major problems. I recently bought the commercial version for myself. It has many nice features missing in the demo, and version 2.03 is System 7 compatable according to Dayna. I did have a problem getting the demo to run on two of the cx's with portrait displays. For some reason, the code to display the splash screen during boot time would crash these Macs. I used the MPW tool dumpobj to find the calls to drawpicture in the INIT code and changed the code so that the picture is not displayed. The demo seems to work without problems on these machines after this patch. I don't know if such a hack will help with your problrms on the fx's, but I can mail you the modified version of the demo if you like. There is also a program called Access PC that allows you to work with DOS floppies as if they were Mac disks. I have not used the product, so I cannot compare it to DOS Mounter. ============================================================================== From: Charlie.Mingo@f421.n109.z1.FidoNet.Org (Charlie Mingo) In order for the DEMO to work, you must label your disk "DEMO" in MS-DOS. (This restriction only applies to the demo version; if it were fully functional, no one would buy the commercial version.) Once the disk was relabelled, it worked fine on my Mac IIci (which has the same floppy drive as the IIfx). ============================================================================== From: dplatt@ntg.com (Dave Platt) The mounter demo does work on my IIfx. However, because it's a demo version, it will _only_ mount disks whose volume name is DEMO. ============================================================================== From: Rick.Carter@brahms.udel.edu (rwcarter@brahms.udel.edu) The demo works, but you name your ms-dos disks with a volume label starting with DEMO then it will come up on your MacIIfx just like a regular Mac disk. Of course, the dos mounter must be put in your system folder and reboot to read in the init. I have had no problems with this demo working on SE/30, MacIIcx, and MacIIsi. The only incompatability I have seen which may your problem is dos mounter will not function along with 32 bit quickdraw. If you have 32qd, then reboot without this init launching. ============================================================================== From: Dave White <Dave.White@vulcan.anu.edu.au> The trick with the Dos Mounter Demo is that your disks have to be called demo or it won't work. - took me a while to figure it out :-). It should work. ============================================================================== From: Nick Wilde <wilde@tigger.Colorado.EDU> This is just a wild guess, but you wouldn't happen to be working on a fx that was upgraded from a II or IIx, would you ? If so, it may not have an FDHD (superdrive) both the dosmounterdemo and AFE need an FDHD to work... P.S. My wife uses dosmounterdemo on a cx and it works just fine.. ============================================================================== From: bmug@garnet.berkeley.edu (BMUG) Currently, the superior product in this category is AccessPC, manufactured by Insignia Solutions, who also sell SoftPC.
