[comp.sys.mac.apps] BinHex question, I think.

I've been having 'poor' luck retrieving applications from
comp.binaries.mac. Does anyone see the hole in my process. It works for
some files, but not very many, and NEVER for multiple piece ones.

I 's' the files from here to our VAX5000. Then I 'vi' the 'pieces' of the
files of interest from the rather large concatenated save file. I preserve
the entire mail message, including the header and trailer. I then 'ftp'
(I've tried BINARY and ASCII) the files to a DOS 5 1/4 floppy. I then
carry the floppy home, and 'apple file exchange' it (with my SE/30) into a
folder. Then with either BinHex4.0 or StuffIt's internal copy of BinHex,
I try to convert it. Most single piece files result in a CRC error
(usually two consecutive CRC errors, one for the resource fork, then a
second one for the body). The result for multiple piece files is usually
an 'unexpected EOF' for the first piece (and I forget what happens to the
subsequent pieces). I've tried 'join segments' within StuffIt with no
luck, although it isn't clear I'm doing the right thing. The most puzzling
thing is that some single piece files work fine (usually the ones that
require the version of something I don't have..).
