Hello all. So, does anyone know of a comm program for the mac that runs dec windows. It seems like there should be some good result from this DEC/Apple cooperation, at least in my mind. One caveat; we will be talking to a VAX over a modem, not a nice, fast ethernet line. Any suggestions? Please reply through e-mail to sellswor@jarthur.claremont.edu or cwebb@vmsa.oac.uci.edu Thanks all. DEC and Apple have built PathWorks (sold by Dec, previously called LanWorks but that name was already taken). I am not a PathWorks user but I wouldn't think that this would run over phone lines. I think that it uses LAT, Dec's proprietary ethernet protocol which will not run though a router. So you can't even use it over a software router between phone lines and ethernet. DEC Windows (like X Windows) take up a TREMENDOUS bandwith. This bandwidth is enough to bring ethernet to it's knees. I don't know if anyone in their right mind would want megabytes of windowing info to be sent over modems. So the answer is probably, No you can't because you wouldn't want to! As always, just my thoughts... --Patrick --hoepfner@heasfs.gsfc.nasa.gov

DECwindows is a superset of Xwindows. In order to run DECwindows, you will need to run something that understands DECwindows. I don't think that anything out there except DEC's own LanWORKS does this. --Patrick Hoepfner hoepfner@heasfs.gsfc.nasa.gov NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center

MacX is nice, cuz it's got rootless windows, but I heard that eXodus is doing that too in the next release. -- +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Len Senetza Internet: senetza@hg.uleth.ca | | Academic Consultant, U of Lethbridge +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+

First, I have to disappoint you a little. There have been long conversations on the subject of X over phone lines in comp.sys.mac.comm, and short of some fairly incredible kludges, nothing has shaken loose. The main barrier is lack of SLIP or PPP support in MacTCP. Is Apple listening? But that's the only barrier. DecWindows is X -- it uses its own upper layers, look-and-feel, etc. So, once you can get a SLIP link working, you should be home free with at least two products. *********************************************************************** * All opinions are my own, and do not | Robert Patt-Corner, IBRD * * necessarily represent my employer, | AppleLink PATTCORNER1 * * colleagues or family | Compuserve 76547,1660 * ***********************************************************************
