Hello there. My question today concerns Appleshare PC and file-sharing with a Mac IIcx running system 7.0. Until know, this mac communicated with an IBM computer via TOPS, which worked quite well. It was a very small distributed server network (just these two computers), and it worked quite well. TOPS also took care of printing from the IBM to an Apple Laserwriter. Once I moved the cx to 7.0, TOPS died a dog's death. Sitka (maker of TOPS) says it will be 3+ months before a new version is ready. So..... will appleshare PC running on the IBM be able to connect to a "shared" folder on the mac? Is there a new version of Appleshare PC coming out? How well does it print? etc... I understand that a 6.0.x mac can connect to a 7.0 mac, is this similar to the Appleshare PC question? Is anyone still reading? I would appreciate any and all responses, and would be willing to summarize if desired. At least within the same zone. Running AppleShare PC on a generic '286 clone allows one to log onto items "shared" by system 7. Haven't tried it across zones, but don't see why it wouldn't work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe Niski niski@reed.edu Mac Support Coordinator Reed College, Portland, OR 97202 503-777-7525

No, there is no new version of AppleShare PC coming -- Apple has turned the product over to Farallon. They have released a new version. > I understand that a 6.0.x mac can connect to a 7.0 mac, is this similar >to the Appleshare PC question? Yes, it is the exact same question. FileShare uses the same AFP protocol as a stand-alone AFP server. Your PC or System 6 machine cant' tell the difference. > Thanks very much, > RAFST3@vms.cis.pitt.edu > Read Fritsch Mike Shoemaker Apple Computer, Inc.

ASPC has no problems connecting to a shared folder on a Mac running 7.0. As far as a new version of ASPC, Apple has sold ASPC to Farallon and they have released a newer version called PhoneNet Talk. It mainly fixes problems when printing from Windows, but hasn't changed much other than that. -- Marcelo Gallardo marcelo%deadzone@princeton.edu Test and Evaluation Specialist ...!princeton!deadzone!marcelo Princeton University marcelo@sparcwood.princeton.edu Advanced Technologies and Applications (609) 258-5661
