Try Dark Side of the Mac, by Tom Dowdy. You can ftp it from
ftp.apple.com
It runs as an app, and the author claims that it patches no traps.
It comes with many modules that you can choose from, as in AfterDark.

Try out Darkness, a Background App- it lets you choose
from a variety of screen savers and it's pretty unobtrusive.
Otherwise Moire 3.2.2 works just fine.
Both oughta be either at sally or sumex.
Darkness is freeware as far as I know, and Moire is Shareware, but
neither are public domain.

I've been using Moire 3.02 without difficulty on an SE/30 (no color).
It should be on sumex-aim.stanford.edu in /info-mac/cp.

I just started using DarkSide by Tom Dowdy of Apple. It's an application
which runs in the background, so it avoids some of the problems associated
with inits. It's works much like AfterDark, even has some graphics
modules which are similar to those in AfterDark. I got it by anonymous
ftp from 128.83.1.21, but its probably at sumex and apple as well.

I agree. I use it on my private Mac. But we find that in a public Mac
lab, novice users frequently 'Quit' from DarkSide.

Pardon a dumb question, but having connected to apple.com, where
do I look for goodies like this?

I use Dimmer which, contrary to rumor, does work with System 7 and is public domain.
Only works on color or gray-scale monitors, though.

Sorry. That's not at all a dumb question; I was being lazy.
DarkSide is in /dts/mac/hacks/

Note that that's at ftp.apple.com, not apple.com. The latter
is (or almost is) defunct, I believe.

!........................

Disable the Quit menu item with ResEdit. Restart and Shut Down (in the
Finder) should still work (= quit Darkside) -- but only in system 7.

I think I have to object. Dimmer works perfectly under system 7. I think it's
one of the best screensavers around.
It's NOT public domain however, it's part of MicroSeeds Screen Gems package.
Not expensive, and well worth the price, but not free.
