[net.bugs.4bsd] cp file2/ file2/

ptw@encore.UUCP (P. Tucker Withington) (01/05/85)

Try cp with two dirs as arguments and no -r on 4.2. A "copy" of the first dir
is put in the second. By copy I mean a data file which looks like the first
dir, but isn't a dir. Is this supposed to be a feature?

                               o.o --tucker
                                ~

"cp dir somewhere" will do a byte copy of the directory on most any Unix.
This behavior is useless enough, and confusing enough to the naive users,
that we altered cp to complain and refuse.
