[comp.lang.functional] Views in Haskell---why were they removed?

Would someone please explain to me why views were removed from Haskell?  I
didn't follow the discussion too closely last year when the subject was
discussed, but `difficult to implement' is a phrase that springs to mind.  They
are of great interest to me because a similar mechanism may solve a problem I
have with importing ADTs into generic units in a language I am playing with.
