German troops land on the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey, the
first British territory occupied in the war.

Some 220,000 French troops garrisoning the Maginot Line surrender to
the Germans.

The U-43 sinks the 13,000 ton British cargo ship Avelona Star. Total
Allied shipping losses for the month amount to some 140 ships of 585,000
tons, with slightly less than half as a result of U-boat attacks.

"This would be the worst possible moment to enter peace negotiations, just
when Hitler appears to hold all the cards in his hand. We do not believe
he holds all the cards and we are going to put that to the test."
- Neville Chamberlain
