Hitler orders that preparations for Operation Sea Lion be completed by
the middle of August, so that the invasion can be launched before the
onset of bad weather in the Channel.   The Army's current plans call for
an invasion of 25 to 40 divisions on a broad front along the southern
coast of Britain, protected by the Luftwaffe and flanking belts of
minefields.

Japanese Prime Minister Yonai resigns, together with his cabinet,
under pressure from that country's military.

US Secretary of State Cordell Hull voices disapproval of Britain's
agreement to close the Burma Road.

The British destroyer HMS Imogen is sunk after a collision with the cruiser
HMS Glasgow off Scotland.

Senator Barkley, speaking on behalf of President Roosevelt, reiterates that
the President has no wish to be re-elected, and frees his delegates to
vote for the candidates of their choice.
