From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Sunday, 6 October, 1940 Bad weather precludes massed night bombing of London, but a few raiders bomb the capital vicinity. This is London's first bomb-free night since early September. The Italian submarine Trichech mistakenly torpedoes and sinks her sister ship, the Gemma. General Antonescu of Rumania takes command of the Iron Guard, cementing his position as dictator of that nation. The Japanese newspaper Hochi warns that war will result if Britain re-opens the Burma Road for arms traffic. The road is scheduled to be opened again on 18 October. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "If the United States refuses to understand the real intention of Japan, Germany, and Italy in concluding an alliance for positive co-operation in creating an new world order and persists in challenging these powers in the belief that the accord is a hostile action there will be no other course open to it than to go to war." - Prince Fumimaro Konoye of Japan
