A Bf 109 raid on London catches numerous citizens in loaded tram cars.
Casualties are heavy.  He 111's severely damage Montrose Airfield in
Scotland, and 150 bombers hit London by night.  The day's air raids also
include the first attack on British soil by Italian bombers. 

In exchange, the RAF bombs Berlin for the twenty-third time.

Japan hints to the USSR that they would consider substantial
compromises in their treaty demands in exchange for a rapid signing.
 
John L. Lewis, president of the C.I.O., declares his support for Wendell
Willkie, warning that Roosevelt will lead the country into war.
